I WATCHED MARK PARKER walk into the restaurant, all salt-and-pepper, slicked-back hair, arrogant expression, and shifty eyes.

Yep. He was the same guy I’d met repeatedly through the years. The same guy who thought I should drop everything to sell my company to him and that I was lucky he was even showing an interest. And for a moment, I thought I was deeply, deeply delusional to think this was a good idea. What was I even doing? I knew this guy. I’d known him for years, and I’d never liked him. He was too self-assured, too arrogant. Too positive that he was above and beyond anyone else in the business.

And that was saying something, coming from me. I dealt with people who had been at the highest end of the business spectrum every day. Hell, I owned and ran a company that could put most other companies in the country to shame. But there was something about Mark that had always seemed.... extra. Something that made him even more difficult than the average company owner.

I’d always been turned off by him, which was why I’d always gone out of my way to annoy him, frankly.

So what the hell was I doing inviting him to lunch?

It’s for Olivia, I reminded myself firmly. Not for me, so my opinion of the guy didn’t matter. I was doing this for her, because she deserved to get to know the guy who had donated half of her DNA.

“Mark,” I said, standing up and holding out a hand. “Thanks for fitting me into your schedule.”

He gave me the smirk I knew so well from our other meetings. The one that made my blood boil. “I knew you’d come around eventually,” he said, all slimy charm and condescension. “I have to say, though, it’s a surprise that you gave in so quickly. I thought I had another six months, at least. I’m happy to be doing business with you.”

I ground my teeth... and reminded myself that I had to make nice with this guy for a bit longer. Just until he agreed to meet with Olivia.

Then I could hate him all I wanted. Unless, of course, she decided to keep him in her life.

And keep me, as well. In which case I’d have to learn to make nice with the guy. Sort of like I was going to do right now.

“Hold on, big guy, that’s not why we’re here,” I said, faking a smile. “I still have no intention of letting you get a hold of my company.”

He frowned like a kid so used to getting his way that he doesn’t understand what’s going on when he doesn’t. “Excuse me?”

Right, well, here was the moment of truth, then. And the moment, it turned out, I hadn’t actually planned for. Because when I reached for a script for what I wanted to say to him, I found it completely missing.

Shit. I hadn’t even thought about what I was going to say to him. I’d been so excited about doing this for Olivia that I hadn’t even considered how I was going to get it done.
